2007, Digital Exhibit, International Museum of Women.
Imagining Ourselves was a project by The International Museum of Women (IMOW), an online museum covering worldwide women’s issues. They were looking for the answer to the question: What defines my generation of women?
There were many categories, and one of them was fashion. I felt quite disappointed by their announcement. It said something along the lines of, ‘Are you chic or a boho girl? Tell us how your clothes talk about you.’ I expected more from an institution that advocates for women.
My rebuttal was that this series is trying to show that just because you wear something, it does not define you or your complexities as a woman. I interviewed young women and asked what their bras said about them while photographing them.
Amazingly, the public voted for this series and won the Best in Latin America from the Imagining Ourselves entries that year.
